$100,000 Scholarship awarded to local student
RMHC of Greater Houston/Galveston was so proud to have been a part of an event that has never taken place in our great city as we gave out a $100,000 McDonald's HACER Scholarship to a very deserving Houston area High School student.
Spring High School graduate Edmar Ordoñez’s outstanding grades and service to his community have helped him earn a $100,000 scholarship from McDonalds.
He was just one of four Hispanic high school seniors chosen from across the country to receive the scholarship awarded by the Ronald McDonald House Charities’ (RMHC) Hispanic American for Education Resources program (HACER). (Taken from The Spring Observer)

Children's Charity's Trailer, Go-Karts Stolen
By Kym Alvarado-Booth
POSTED: Monday, June 2, 2008 HOUSTON -- Thieves hitched up a box trailer filled with some cargo that helps kids with cancer and other serious illnesses, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday. Patients at the Ronald McDonald House said the heist only hurts kids who are struggling with life-threatening illnesses. "That's just stupid. I don't know why somebody would steal something you know helps out sick kids and stuff," 16-year-old Shawn King said. He has returned to the Ronald McDonald
House on Holcombe Drive for a six-month check up after a double lung and kidney transplant in January. "If you lived here one day, you would understand why this house exists and why things are needed for this house," said Kelly Legrand. She clutched tightly to a pager in her hand that could go off any minute if donor lungs become available for her 13-year-old son, Nicholas, whose first set of transplanted lungs has given out. "People come here and bring meals and there's volunteers that give us activities to keep us very busy," said Nicholas, who has lived at the Ronald McDonald House for the last six months.
Families are provided with rooms and meals during their stay. Donations help furnish the Ronald McDonald Houses with games, TVs and toys. "It hits me right in the gut," said Debbie Adams, director of the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Adams races the go-karts at the Racing for Children Grand Prix event and tours with the cars. Children love the cars -- one is painted black with yellow 'M's and the other is all pink with a leopard-print seat. The large tool chest is at least four and a half feet tall and painted very pink. "I hope somebody realizes that all the equipment, the cars and the gear help raise money to benefit these children. I hope they give it back. Don't trash it, just leave it and we'll be glad to take it back," Adams said. Adams describes the trailer as a 6- by 10-foot, white, single-axle box trailer with pink and yellow lettering. It reads, "Get your pink on" and
"Get ready for a Mac attack," a reference to the McDonald's hamburger, the Big Mac. The trailer was temporarily moved out of the warehouse to make room for records at the new Ronald McDonald House Charities offices at 3664 Walnut Bend Lane at Westpark Drive.
